THE HOLLAND CHRISTMAS HERALD 2015
Happy Christmas friends. Here’s our traditional letter and slideshow.
Christmas Day will be another one on the sand with the five of us at Fingal Beach, along with Steve’s brother Greg, mum and her husband Stan.
It’s been a hectic year. Last summer saw a steady flow of friends at Fingal for barbecues and fun times. In fact that steady flow continued all year, as the photos attest. Steve, Meg and I had a few days in Sydney in early May to see family and friends. My job at Council has been, well, exhaustingly constant. I’m more than ready for this long holiday, the highlight of which will be the arrival of my fabulous New York friend, Kathleen, in January. She is with us for three weeks and we’ll head down to Melbourne for five days for some tennis and some touring.
In September, Steve did a major renovation on our caravan and made it look so much a like a hip little one-bedroom apartment that Kate moved into it as soon as the summer weather hit!
Kate took a break from her hospitality work in February, and spent three amazing weeks touring Cambodia and Vietnam. She came home insisting we should all tour SE Asia as a family at some point. Her newfound hobby of roller derby lasted all of a week when she broke her hand having a little practise on the verandah. In April, the same month she turned 21, she landed a full time job in graphic/digital design at a local company, Local Search, which she is now hoping will lead to better jobs, possibly in Brisbane next year. Her move out of home again seems imminent.
Matt continued his casual ushering work at Event Cinemas and got trained in kitchen/cooking duties, preparing food for the “gold class” customers. By May he decided he wanted to go to uni and applied for a film and TV degree at Bond, which, I’m proud to say, he began on a part-time basis in September. He plans to go full time next year. His old Volvo finally met its maker and he now drives a trusty new Volvo. Matt’s girlfriend, Bella, is a familiar and welcome face in our home these days.
Meg continues to embrace music, school and life in general with her distinctive passion. Last month, she landed her first job at Event Cinemas (it’s who you know, right?) and this month turned 16 and got her learner’s permit.
My dad’s health has deteriorated a fair bit, with a diagnosis of early dementia. He is still fully coherent of everyone but sadly, doesn’t converse anymore.
We wish you a wonderful holiday season and trust this finds you healthy and happy.
With love, Rob, Steve, Kate, Matt and Meg.
