THE HOLLAND CHRISTMAS HERALD 2016
Happy Christmas friends. Attached is our traditional slideshow. We hope you’re not too overloaded with Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, general web content etc to enjoy it! Watch to the end and you may even spot yourself!
2016 was a year of visitors, travel, reunions and change. It began with a long holiday and playing tour guide to my fabulous New York friend Kathleen. Besides showing her the local sights and introducing her to the natives, we journeyed to Melbourne for the Australian Open tennis.
We had plenty of short, welcome breaks this year. In May, Steve and I went to Queenstown/Arrowtown for 4 days; in June, we battled the crowds to see Sydney’s Vivid festival; in August, to Sydney again for our friend Ian’s 60th birthday; in September, all of us bar Kate went to WA for Steve’s stepsister’s Al’s 40th and combined this with four days at his Aunty Pat’s farm at Kudardup, just past Margaret River. I shot back to Sydney in November for my 35th high school reunion, on a tall ship on the harbour. In late November, I hosted a reunion of my journalist cadet pals from Sydney days – the stories didn’t stop!
In February, Kate moved to a flat in Brisbane with her old school friend Britt. She landed a new job there as a graphic designer with a company that owns a group of restaurants and bars, so suffice to say she’s got a solid social life. The best thing is she’s only an hour up the road, so I get to see plenty of her.
Matt has now completed the first year of his film and TV degree at Bond Uni which has kept him on his toes. Between uni, his casual job at the cinemas and doing freelance gigs like wedding videos, he’s very busy. His girlfriend Bella came to WA with us, and is still very much part of our family.
Meg finished her year on a high, topping three subjects, being named Visual Art captain; and getting her driver’s licence a couple of weeks ago. Haven’t seen much of her since then! We now have three proud Volvo owners in the family. She works casually at the cinemas as well, usually in the candy bar. Year 12 awaits.
September brought two new things for Steve. The first was a professional toy - a drone – check out the videos below; the second was a “real job” in the form of three days a week at the local paper, the Bulletin. He reckons he’s reached the pinnacle of his career with two front pages of the affiliate weekly rag. (see show) Steve was cured of his snoring this year, thanks to a breathing machine for sleep apnea. I’d like to say I’m sleeping better these days, but insomnia seems to come with being over 50.
Most of you would know already that on October 29, I lost my darling Dad, Ian Harvey. He had been in a nursing home for two and a bit years, had been declining slowly for all that time, and was ready to go. We celebrated his 86 years of life with a service on 10 November and all five of his children spoke. I will miss him greatly.
We wish you a wonderful Christmas and send you lots of love.
Rob, Steve, Kate, Matt and Meg.
